On its journey to digitalise its global production network, Mercedes-Benz’s Berlin-Marienfelde site is set to become a competence center to drive the digitalisation.
Focusing its efforts on the development and implementation of MO360, Mercedes-Benz digital production ecosystem, the automotive manufacturer is set to invest a “double-digit million amount” to transform the plant into a campus for developing, testing and implementing pioneering software applications for its global production network.
Being the oldest site in the Mercedes-Benz global powertrain production network, the works council and Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz management team have agreed to ensure a sustainable future for the plant, transforming it into a new competence center for future production processes.
“As the oldest Mercedes-Benz production plant in the field of conventional engine technology, the transformation of the Berlin site is a symbol of the shift in the automotive industry. Electrification and digitalization are the core pillars of our corporate strategy. Turning Berlin into a competence center for digitalization and allocating production volumes in the field of e-mobility, we can successfully secure the future of our long-established Berlin site,” commented Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG, Production and Supply Chain.
Mercedes-Benz’s activities in Berlin will change from the production of conventional powertrain components to developing, testing and validating future software applications and concepts for MO360 in a real production environment.
The Mercedes-Benz Digital Factory Campus plays an important role in our global production network, developing state-of-the-art MO360 software and qualifying all employees in the field of digitalization. With these measures, we will reach further increases in efficiency and quality – important drivers for the future and our ambitious goal of CO2-neutrality in less than 20 years. Together with our partners we will shape the future of industrial production and set a new benchmark with digital MO360 products from Berlin,” added Burzer.
